Athrosamid

A Non-Surgical Treatment Option for Knee Osteoarthritis

Ultrasound-Guided Knee Injections | Dr. Jess Hobson, ND, MSCP

Serving Fort Langley, Langley, Surrey, Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam and the Fraser Valley

What is Arthrosamid

Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable injectable hydrogel developed for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis in adults.

It consists of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid injections, Arthrosamid® is designed to remain within the knee joint and integrate with the synovial tissue.

Clinical studies have reported improvements in knee pain, stiffness, and physical function following treatment. Long-term studies have followed patients for up to five years, although individual outcomes vary and treatment is not guaranteed to provide relief.

Who may be a candidate?

Arthrosamid® may be considered for adults with diagnosed knee osteoarthritis who:

  • Experience persistent knee pain or stiffness

  • Have difficulty with walking, stairs, or recreational activities

  • Have not achieved sufficient relief with conservative treatments

  • Are exploring non-surgical treatment options

  • Would like to understand the differences between Arthrosamid®, hyaluronic acid, PRP, and corticosteroid injections

A clinical assessment is required to determine whether Arthrosamid® is appropriate. Certain medical conditions, prior knee procedures, implants, or active infections may make treatment unsuitable.

What to expect during your consultation

Step 1 — Comprehensive Knee Assessment

Your consultation includes a review of your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and relevant imaging.

Step 2 — Diagnostic Ultrasound

Where clinically appropriate, musculoskeletal ultrasound may be used to assess the knee and help guide treatment planning.

Step 3 — Individualized Treatment Discussion

We review your options, including Arthrosamid®, and discuss expected benefits, limitations, potential risks, costs, and recovery considerations.

Step 4 — Treatment Planning

If Arthrosamid® is appropriate, a separate procedure appointment can be arranged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Arthrosamid® the same as a hyaluronic acid injection?

No. Arthrosamid® is a non-absorbable polyacrylamide hydrogel, whereas hyaluronic acid injections use a different material that is gradually broken down by the body.

How long can Arthrosamid® last?

Clinical studies have reported sustained improvements in some patients for up to five years. This does not mean every patient will experience relief for that duration.

Can Arthrosamid® cure knee osteoarthritis?

No. Arthrosamid® is intended to manage symptoms rather than cure osteoarthritis or regenerate cartilage.
